Questions

Questions patients ask

Do I need a referral to see Dr. McMillan?
No, a referral is not required to schedule a visit. Many patients do come to the office on a referral from another physician, and some insurance plans require one before they will cover the visit, so it is worth calling your insurance provider to check your plan's rules before your appointment.
What conditions does Dr. McMillan treat?
Dr. McMillan treats injuries and conditions of the hip and shoulder, with a focus in sports medicine. This includes muscle injuries and avulsions (an injury where a tendon or muscle pulls away from the bone it attaches to), arthritis of the hip, hip and thigh muscle strains and contusions (bruises to the muscle), lateral hip pain often described as snapping hip, and lateral ankle instability, a looseness in the ligaments on the outside of the ankle that can make the joint feel like it gives way.
What procedures does Dr. McMillan perform?
Dr. McMillan performs arthroscopic surgery, a procedure that uses a small camera and small instruments, of the shoulder, hip, and knee, as well as reverse total shoulder replacement and meniscal repair in the knee. Dr. McMillan performs the mi-eye procedure, a minimally invasive in-office arthroscopy technique, as well as arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip, and knee, along with the Brostrom procedure, a surgery that repairs torn ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Which procedure fits a given patient depends on the specific injury and is decided during an evaluation.
Will I need surgery for my hip or shoulder pain?
Not necessarily. Dr. McMillan evaluates each patient's hip and shoulder symptoms individually and typically starts with non-surgical options such as activity changes, physical therapy, or injections. Surgery becomes part of the conversation when those options have not relieved symptoms, and the decision is made together with the patient after a full evaluation.
Does Dr. McMillan only treat athletes?
No. Sports medicine, Dr. McMillan's area of fellowship training, covers injuries related to activity and movement in anyone, not only competitive athletes. Patients who are active at any level, including those with job-related or everyday strains, are seen in the practice.
What is Dr. McMillan's training background?
Dr. McMillan completed residency training in orthopedic surgery, the branch of medicine that treats bones, joints, and muscles, through the Peninsula Hospital Consortium with North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Systems in Long Island, NY. Dr. McMillan completed fellowship training in Arthroscopic Sports Medicine: Shoulders, Hips, Knees and Elbows at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a focus on sports medicine, the shoulder, and the hip.
Is Dr. McMillan accepting new patients?
Yes. Dr. McMillan's office in Burlington Township, NJ is accepting new patients, with or without a referral from another physician.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, any referral paperwork you were given, and copies of relevant imaging or records from prior visits for your hip, shoulder, or knee. Arriving a few minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork helps the visit start on time.
Does insurance cover a visit with Dr. McMillan?
That depends on your specific plan. The office can confirm coverage, any referral requirements, and what to expect for your visit before you come in, so calling ahead is the most reliable way to get an answer specific to your insurance.
