Do I need a referral to see Dr. McMillan?
Not to schedule, but your insurance plan may require one for the visit to be covered.
Most patients reach Dr. McMillan through a referral from another physician, so if you have one, ask the referring office to send your records to the Burlington Township, NJ practice ahead of your appointment. That gives the team your history before you walk in.
Is Dr. McMillan accepting new patients?
Yes. Dr. McMillan is accepting new patients at his Burlington Township, NJ practice, including patients coming in for shoulder, hip, or general sports medicine concerns.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, a current medication list, and any prior imaging or records tied to your shoulder, hip, or knee.
If you're being seen for something specific, such as arthritis of the hip, a hip or thigh muscle strain, or lateral hip pain sometimes called snapping hip, bring any notes or films your referring physician already has, so there's no delay tracking them down later.
Will I need an X-ray or MRI at this visit?
Not always. Dr. McMillan orders imaging, such as an X-ray or an MRI (a scan that uses magnets to produce detailed pictures of soft tissue), only when your exam points to something that needs a closer look.
His exam draws on fellowship training in arthroscopic sports medicine of the shoulder, hip, knee, and elbow at the University of Massachusetts, so the decision to image or not is made with that focus in mind rather than as a routine first step.
How long will my appointment take?
Most first visits run 30 to 60 minutes.
That covers your history, a physical exam focused on the shoulder, hip, or knee area you came in for, and a review of any imaging you brought or that's ordered that day.
What happens after my first visit?
You'll leave with a plan for your next step, not just a diagnosis.
Depending on what the exam finds, that plan might be a non-surgical approach, additional imaging, or a conversation about one of the arthroscopic procedures Dr. McMillan performs for the shoulder, hip, or knee. Your care team will walk through the options with you before you leave.
Who do I call with questions before my visit?
Call the practice directly.
The office can confirm referral requirements, your insurance details, and what to bring, so it's worth reaching out ahead of time if anything about your visit is unclear.
